What is a radiology second opinion?
A radiology second opinion is an independent review of your existing medical images by another radiologist. The examination itself is not repeated. Usually, a second opinion involves reviewing the images from an examination you have already completed. The radiologist may indicate if additional imaging should be discussed with your physician.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is required to request a second opinion through Xamo.You may request an independent review on your own initiative. However, we strongly recommend discussing your results and any medical decisions with your treating physician or healthcare professional.
Will the second opinion replace my original diagnosis?
No. A radiology second opinion is an additional professional interpretation of your medical imaging. It may confirm the original interpretation, provide additional information or result in a different interpretation. Your healthcare professional remains responsible for your overall medical care and treatment decisions.
Is this covered by my national health insurance card ? (RAMQ Québec, OHIP Ontario..)
In general, Radiology Second Opinion services offered at the patient’s request are not covered by national health insurance.
But, with a valid health card, Radiology Second Opinion is covered by OHIP for Ontario residents and RAMQ for Québec résidents. Your doctor’s office sends us the referral directly.
A receipt for services can be provided according to applicable terms and conditions.
How long does it take?
The turnaround time depends on the complexity of the case and the availability of the appropriate radiologist. In general, reports may be completed within several days to one or two weeks. If you have a time-sensitive medical concern, please discuss it directly with your healthcare professional.
Is my information confidential?
Xamo takes the confidentiality and security of personal and health information seriously and has security and privacy measures in place for the information it handles. All information is processed in accordance with the confidentiality and security standards in force in Canada.
Does a second opinion replace my doctor?
No. A second opinion provides an additional radiological perspective. It does not replace your physician, specialist or other healthcare professional.
Who reviews my images?
Your case is reviewed by a physician radiologist with experience in medical imaging. The appropriate radiologist may depend on the type and complexity of the examination submitted. You can attach your questions related to the exam.
Will my doctor receive the report?
The second-opinion report is provided to the person who requested the service.You may share the report with your physician or healthcare team. We encourage you to discuss the results with your treating physician, particularly when treatment or additional medical evaluation is being considered.
Can the radiologist recommend additional examinations?
The radiologist may indicate that additional imaging or clinical evaluation should be discussed with your healthcare professional when appropriate. A second opinion does not replace an in-person medical consultation and does not constitute emergency medical care.
